EPALE - Electronic Platform for Adult Learning in Europe

In today’s fast-evolving world, it’s hard to escape the often-anxious discussions about AI and its potential impact on our jobs, learning, and even relationships. Some experts predict that within just a few years, AI could surpass human capabilities in nearly every domain. This month, we explore what a fair and sustainable AI revolution across Europe might look like—and how adult learning could play a crucial role in shaping it.

In this edition of the EPALE Newscast, Chris Kremidas-Courtney reminds us that while AI will undoubtedly reshape our future, we still have a say in how that happens. In particular, adult education can be a powerful tool for learning to collaborate with AI rather than being replaced by it. Researcher Saskia Eschenbacher suggests that instead of competing with machines, we should lean into what makes us uniquely human. Our diverse experiences, empathy, and ability to embrace vulnerability remain invaluable strengths in building meaningful connections and communities.

Human connections are also at the heart of the European Commission’s newly launched strategy to strengthen human capital across the EU. Beyond fostering basic skills and continuous learning, supporting the free movement of skilled professionals and encouraging collaboration will be essential in keeping Europe both competitive and fair.
