Get ready for the next EPALE discussion on "Sustainability and adult learning: moving beyond green skills?"

On Tuesday 19 March from 10 am to 4 pm CET, EPALE will be hosting an online discussion on sustainability and adult learning.

The discussion will kick-off with a live-streaming featuring Barbara Archesso, member of the EU Working Group on Learning for Sustainability, and Katharina Wiese, Policy Manager for Economic Transition and Gender Equality at the European Environmental Bureau, moderated by Andrea Lapegna, Deputy Director of the Lifelong Learning Platform.

The live stream will be followed by a moderated written discussion, hosting the contributions of our EPALE community members.

The context

Sustainability in education and training has risen as a significant topic in the last few years. The European Union has taken decisive steps to make the Green Transition come true by addressing educational needs, notably with the European Union’s Council Recommendation on learning for the green transition and sustainable development, as well as the launch of the Green Competences framework, or GreenComp. The EU’s efforts to promote the green transition in the education sector have focused decisively on the promotion of “green skills”, an effort that is underpinned by the ongoing European Year of Skills, whose aims closely align with the ones of the Green (and the Digital) Transition. 

Skills are, by definition of the European Commission, the “ability to apply knowledge and use know-how to complete tasks and solve problems”. Green skills are essential to effectively tackle complex interconnected issues like climate change, environmental challenges and finding ways to collectively address them. As a matter of fact, challenges related to anthropogenic climate change are broader than any other, and equipping the EU citizens with the skills, but also competences, attitudes and mindsets to face them is an essential endeavour to create a conscious, resilient adult population.

This online discussion will delve into this topic, broadening the angle that green skills provide and addressing the needs of the adult population in Europe to make the Green Transition just, long-lasting, and effective.

  • How can we step up the Green Transition? What role for adult learning in fostering green skills?

  • What's the role of the key competences for lifelong learning in this scenario?

  • What is the connection between green skills, competences and attitudes and active citizenship?

Good morning,

 

In my opinion, there is a tendency to talk about concerns about green skills as if it were a generational issue, pitting young people (those who supposedly care about the environment) against older people (those who supposedly don't care about the environment). I think that's not true and that it's terrible, creating generational gaps. 
The environment has to be an issue that matters to everyone and the development of green skills has to be transversal to all age groups and above all it has to be something that changes attitudes and behaviors. Spilling green paint on politicians, as young people do, doesn't seem like the behavior of someone with green skills. I just think they want to attract attention and show a lack of respect for everyone.

Information about the Erasmus+ project ECO-COMPASS:

The main objective of the project was to facilitate social inclusion of people living with mental disability by developing their ecological skills and competences, by shaping their ecological attitudes and environmental awareness, by education based on international experiences. The project lays a great emphasis on the promotion and development of international cooperation between participating organisations, the establishment and strengthening of partnership networks and the enhancement of the professionalism of the organisations.

It is difficult for adults to change their stereotypes, so successful learning usually occurs in groups with people of different ages. Children and grandchildren, with their example and enthusiasm, can convince us that sustainability must start with everyone.
