Why do adult learners dropout?

The strategic partnership DIDO (dropping-in the dropouts) aims at increasing the learning motivation of adult students throughout Europe, by developing an online toolkit with effective and practical methods to reduce the dropout rate in adult education.

The DIDO consortium has, each in their own country, carried out a quantitative and qualitative research regarding dropout of adult learners. Each analysis gave an insight in the occurrence of dropout in the respective institution, the reasons for dropout of adult learners and the existing activities and measures in dealing with the prevention of dropout of adult students. DIDO identified the main reasons for dropout in adult education. We narrowed the reasons down to six major clusters to work with in the next stage of the project.

  1. It was found that students dropout due to organisational issues, such as planning, location, infrastructures and curricular management;
  2. On the other hand personal reasons are an important factor why students dropout. These are all causes associated with family, finances and health issues of a student but also reasons that can be influenced during the education process: student performance anxiety, learning style, self-confidence and effort;
  3. Often students lack certain skills needed to go through the courses, such as skills related with study method, time management, ICT, foreign languages and skills and knowledge previously acquired;
  4. Also the lack of well defined goals and a concrete notion of the opportunities, benefits and added value at personal and professional levels, associated with the course and education makes them dropout;
  5. Class dynamics which involves the interaction between student-teacher, student-class and the way the teacher does the class management (including differentiating between students, adapting the explanations to the level of the student and giving proper feedback) is an important reason for dropout;
  6. Students often have the wrong expectations about the curriculum, the schedule and the level of difficulty of the courses, which often causes a reality check during their studies which leads to dropping out.

Motivation is an overall factor explaining why students dropout as well. Although "motivation" is one of the most mentioned reasons for dropout, it is a consequence of reasons and not a reason by itself.

This is great research and most valuable part in it I find - Measures previewed or implemented to reduce adult learning dropout. 
Mostly we have some sense of reasons why people drop out, but how to prevent it from happening in the future takes many different methods that are nicely described in this research. I would agree to the first five reasons, but about the sixth, I should read more in research, because unfortunately often happens that expectations about the curriculum are that- it should be delivered as it is. But professors being in charge of it freely change it in middle or goes of it totally. For me, it is not "wrong expectations" I assume we expect an airport schedule to work as it is and about courses, it is the same. Otherwise, it creates little chaos or gives a sense of disappointment.

All the reasons which are listed in this report about the article are very relevant. The same I am witnessing during my studying. Many people come and go, or take a gap year. Some of them like me, have no choice and have to attend some classes which are not relevant at all. In my opinion, there are standards and requirements in the educational system, but in some situations, they have to be replanned in terms of demand. It is not fair when you have to study something which you have already been studying just because it is on the list.
