"La Almineta", the caravan that wants to become a food truck to change students' eating habits

IES Almina, with its project "La Almineta" was one of the institutes selected, for the second time, as one of the most innovative centres in the country in the VI Convocatoria de Ayudas Dualiza, an initiative of FPEmpresa and CaixaBank Dualiza that promotes the creation of innovation projects in Vocational Training.
The main objective of this eye-catching project was to develop a food truck that would serve as a learning tool for students, but also to change the eating habits of many of the school's pupils.

As explained by the project coordinator, Manuel Maldonado, "it is quite a broad and complete project as it involves the involvement and joint work of two completely different professional families from those taught at the school, such as the hotel and catering and tourism family and the transport and vehicle maintenance family".
To this end, a caravan was transformed into a food truck where our young people could buy healthy breakfast menus based on natural fruit smoothies, cereals, nuts and dried fruit, among other foods. These menus were prepared by the students of the Basic Degree in Cooking and Catering, whose recipes were compiled in a book.
The idea is that "they would prepare the healthy menus, try them out and then sell them to our students to try to get them to change their habits". "Every week we are testing healthy breakfasts". This was corroborated by María Pilar Méndez, teacher of Basic Vocational Training in Cookery, who commented in an interview with El Faro de Ceuta that "every week we are testing healthy breakfasts. We emphasise natural fruit juices, sandwiches without saturated fats, dairy products and lots of fruit and vegetables. They do their tests, they try them out and say yes, no".
In the meantime, the Vehicle Maintenance Intermediate Degree was in charge of the entire interior and exterior transformation of the caravan in 'La Almineta': metallic structure, electrical installation, etc. The idea is to continue taking the Almineta to all educational events in order to spread the greatness of healthy breakfasts and promote the culture of healthy eating.
The origin of the initiative arose from the lack of a cafeteria in the school for the students, as the only one that exists only serves teachers. "We had noticed that the vast majority of students brought to school breakfasts based on industrial juices, pastries and even drinks such as Energy. So it was therefore decided that it was advisable to help them in these matters relating to their diet, said the head of the project.
IES Almina was one of those chosen in December 2022, and since then it has been working on the adaptation of the caravan, which has all the necessary equipment to prepare and serve breakfast and to continue offering useful and meaningful vocational training to its students. Let creativity and cooperation in VET prevail!
