New Policy Brief from iRead4Skills: Literacy for Life and Work 

The European project iRead4Skills, funded by Horizon Europe, has just released its Policy Brief, offering data-driven insights and strategic recommendations to improve functional literacy among low-literate adults, particularly in Adult Learning (AL) and Vocational Education and Training (VET) contexts. 

 What did the surveys reveal? Findings from Portugal, Spain, and French-speaking regions show that many adults struggle with everyday textsfrom prescriptions and legal documents to public transport notices and marketing materials. These literacy gaps affect not just comprehension, but also confidence, digital and numeracy skills, and job readiness. 

What does the Brief recommend? The iRead4Skills team proposes action along three key axes: 

  1. Improve access to readable content through plain language initiatives across public and consumer-facing sectors. 

  1. Support AL/VET programmes by developing realistic and context-based learning materials. 

  1. Strengthen strategic partnerships to ensure lasting integration of the iRead4Skills system across educational networks. 

Real-world impact The project has already engaged with hundreds of organizations across Portugal (e.g. Qualifica Centres), Spain, Argentina, and French-speaking countries, supporting trainers and adult learners directly.
