The realm of education has been undergoing a transformation. Digitalization in all areas leads to new forms of teaching and training. New technology enables new formats, new methods, and new immersive learning experiences.
Today, we dive into the training of professional drivers and the opportunities and challenges digitalization brings here.
Discover GamingDRV, an Erasmus+ project where virtual classrooms with gamified learning elements take the wheel, steering us toward more effective, engaging, inclusive training methods.
Picture the future
Picture this: A virtual classroom, not bound by physical limitations, or worry of travels, where trainers and learners (in this case professional drivers) eagerly await the training session, because they know it will be a day spent well and efficiently at the place of their choice.
The power of gamified learning
Gamified learning transforms mundane training sessions into challenges, rewarding the participants and fostering healthy competition while working in teams to learn together and build a sense of community. The idea is to combine the discipline of driver CPC training with the engagement of gamification elements to boost motivation and knowledge retention.
Engaging the learner
Traditional driver CPC training often struggles with maintaining learner engagement and/ or motivation. Especially in virtual sessions, engagement and interactivity is a challenge for many instructors. Entering a gamified virtual classroom, they can now leverage the power of gamified virtual training and make the compulsory driver CPC training memorable. Learners become active participants, making choices, discussing learning content, responding to challenges, and earning rewards.
Behind the scenes
Unfortunately, in many European countries, virtual training is not yet permitted for driver CPC training. Finland is an inspiring exception, showing that virtual training can be successful in CPC training. And indeed, developing a virtual classroom concept with gamified learning elements requires a lot. Technological ability and skills, educational and didactical expertise as well as a legislation that allows for virtual training.
The GamingDRV project
GamingDRV takes on this challenge by developing following:
- A virtual classroom concept and curriculum for the driver CPC training.
- Gamified Learning Elements (GLE) to be used in a virtual classroom.
- GameTrain – a self-paced eLearning for trainers on how to train in a virtual classroom using gamified learning elements.
- An online pool of resources for trainers that instruct in a virtual classroom and use gamified learning elements.
- Implementation guidelines for virtual learning in driver training and beyond addressed at different stakeholders.
