AnthroAction Toolkit: empowering NGOs on qualitative research

AnthroAction trained graduates into helping NGOs tackle social challenges through applied anthropological research and design thinking.

AnthroAction project trained graduates into helping NGOs tackle social challenges. Through applied anthropological research and design thinking, we came up with solutions to unruly problems. Think of a problem like: why is our organisation's membership declining? Or: how can we better train the new generation of young people in leadership?

The project AnthroAction

AnthroAction is an Erasmus+ funded project that supported social science and humanities graduates in finding careers beyond academia. It provided hands-on training in applied anthropology, action research, and design thinking, equipping participants with essential skills to address real-world challenges.

The project developed and piloted a three-month hybrid training programme in the Netherlands and the Czech Republic. This programme helped graduates apply anthropological methods like fast ethnography, personal effect, and narrative storytelling to solve complex problems. Participants worked with European NGOs, conducting research and developing solutions to strengthen community engagement.

Toolkit

Upon completing the programme, a toolkit was created. It shares key lessons learned from AnthroAction’s collaboration with NGOs. It provides insights on reaching audiences, building meaningful connections, and ensuring long-term impact. Additionally, it includes practical tips for NGOs on commissioning qualitative research, like ethnography, and explains why anthropologists could be a great addition to the team.

The toolkit is available below in the three languages of the project.
