University of East London offers free HE course to refugees and asylum seekers

Refugees and asylum seekers are being offered places on a free weekend course at the University of East London, running for 12 weeks and starting on 10 January 2020. The course aims to introduce students to the Higher Education system and provide them with the opportunity to identify the skills and knowledge needed to apply for a place at university.

Participants will also learn about learning pathways and opportunities available to people from a refugee and asylum seeker background. The course ultimately aims to improve social inclusion for people from these unique and complex backgrounds.
Modules will cover ELT skills, specifically the IELTS exam preparation, which migrants are expected to complete to a certain level in order to be considered able to complete higher education studies in the UK, as well as Academic English, which will help learners prepare to write academic assignments and communicate in an educational environment. Digital skills will also be a significant focus. A series of introductory lectures and creative workshops will allow for the dissemination of information.
Those interested in applying for the course should register by emailing t.mpopo@uel.ac.uk. Educators and learning providers are encouraged to share information about the course with their refugees and asylum seeker learners and professional networks.
