Presentation by Emese Alter, a psychologist, from our partner organisation Hàttér in Budapest:
Even though members of the LGBTIQ+ community are overrepresented among those who use mental health services, in psychology training in most European countries, students either receive no or very little information about adequate care of LGBTIQ+ clients. This presentation focuses on the affirmative approach in psychology and counseling and aims to familiarise participants with the main tools and approaches that can promote affirmative care. During the session, the lecture will introduce the mental health indicators of LGBTQI clients and their specific risk factors, the concepts and manifestations of hetero- and cisnormativity, minority stress, and microaggression, as well as the basic principles and approaches of affirmative care.
