We welcome submissions of abstracts and proposals for thematic sessions at the upcoming conference, which will focus on intergenerational cohesion. We encourage papers that address the specific challenges and opportunities associated with aging populations and demographic changes from an intergenerational perspective. Submissions highlighting best practices and sustainable solutions are particularly welcome.

Intergenerational Cohesion

Without attention to intergenerational cohesion, communities may face increased social isolation, age-based stereotypes, and strained family dynamics, especially as life expectancy increases. Bridging generational gaps by fostering positive relationships between age groups promotes respect, understanding, and cooperation, which in turn makes communities more inclusive and resilient. These relationships provide older adults with opportunities for social engagement, reducing loneliness and allowing them to share their life experiences with younger generations. Younger people, in turn, receive support, care, and a sense of continuity through these bonds, which enhances the well-being of all concerned. Neglecting these connections can lead to economic pressures and reduced community solidarity. By actively fostering intergenerational bonds, societies create supportive environment which allows all generations to thrive, strengthening communities and benefiting individuals of everyall ages.

The following issues require particular attention, although this list is not exhaustive:

1. Economic and Labor Market Challenges: Strengthening Intergenerational Solidarity

  • Challenges for pension systems, income security, and labour markets arising from population aging.

  • The need to establish intergenerational networks to reduce strain on social services, healthcare systems, and pensions.

  • The importance of managing age diversity in workplaces to drive innovation and maintain competitiveness.

2. Family Dynamics and Intergenerational Care: Sharing Responsibility Across Generations

  • The role of traditional family structures in caring for older adults and the challenges posed by insufficient social services and healthcare support.

  • Strengthening intergenerational bonds to ease caregiving burdens, prevent neglect, and reduce family tensions.

  • Developing policies and community programs to support families in caregiving roles.

3. Social Isolation and Loneliness: Connecting Generations for Emotional Well-Being

  • The risk of social isolation among older adults due to a lack of intergenerational connections, negatively impacting mental and physical health.

  • The need to foster intergenerational connections to improve older adults' quality of life.

  • The critical role of intergenerational communication in bridging generational gaps and building mutual understanding.

4. Reinforced Stereotypes and Ageism: Breaking Barriers Across Generations

  • Limited interaction between generations perpetuates negative stereotypes and ageist attitudes, fostering social divisions.

  • Promoting intergenerational connections to challenge stereotypes, build empathy, and create an inclusive society.

  • Educating communities about ageism to encourage mutual respect and collaboration.helps to break down these stereotypes, promoting a more inclusive society that values all ages

5. Designing Age-Friendly and Inclusive Spaces: Building Communities for All Generations

  • Designing social spaces, housing, and public services that are accessible and welcoming to all generations.

  • Prioritizing the human rights of older adults to foster age-friendly environments.

  • Strengthening intergenerational cohesion to enhance community resilience and solidarity.

  • Integrating universal design principles into urban planning to benefit people of all ages.
