Why You Should Learn Maltese — And How It Changed My Life

When people think of learning a new language in Europe, Maltese is rarely the first one that comes to mind. But after moving to Malta, I realized that learning Maltese is not just about adding a skill — it’s about building real connection, understanding local culture on a deeper level, and becoming part of a unique and beautiful community.
That’s exactly why I started learning it.
As an expat, I wanted to do more than just live in Malta — I wanted to belong. I wanted to support my children, who were starting to learn Maltese in school, and I wanted to be able to understand conversations happening around me, whether in a café, on a bus, or at the playground. I hoped to make local friends, not just talk to fellow expats. And I knew that language was the key.
At first, I began filming short videos to help myself remember new words and phrases. It was my personal learning method — simple, fun, and practical. I never expected that anyone else would be interested. But when I uploaded a video to TikTok, the reaction was overwhelming. So many people — expats, tourists, and even Maltese locals — reached out with support and encouragement.
I quickly discovered that many people want to learn Maltese but simply don’t have the time or opportunity to attend language classes. That’s when I realized my content could be more than personal practice — it could help others, too.
Now, I regularly create short, engaging videos teaching useful Maltese words and expressions. My goal is to make the language more accessible — something people can learn little by little, even with a busy schedule. And the response has been incredible: Maltese people have shown so much love and appreciation, celebrating every learner who makes an effort to speak their language.
Learning Maltese has opened so many doors for me. It’s helped me understand the culture better, form deeper relationships, and feel more at home here. But even more importantly, it’s allowed me to inspire others to take that first step — even if it’s just learning one word a day.
If you’re thinking about learning Maltese, my advice is simple: do it. Not just to speak — but to connect, to understand, and to belong.
