What Does It Mean to Be Intelligent in the Age of AI?

In recent years, we have been making a great effort to define what artificial intelligence is.

In recent years, we have been making a great effort to define what artificial intelligence is. We ask whether machines can think “better” or “worse” than us, whether they will one day be more creative, faster, or wiser. Yet, there is a more uncomfortable question that remains unanswered:

Do we truly know what it means to be intelligent?

For centuries, science and philosophy have debated this concept. Is intelligence the ability to solve problems? To adapt? To create beauty? To imagine futures? We have not even agreed on whether intelligence is a uniquely human trait, or whether animals —and perhaps nature itself— also display intelligence in different forms.

And yet, here we are: trying to define and measure the intelligence of machines. Do we do it to understand them… or to reassure our own ego?

The paradox is that, by speaking of artificial intelligence, we may actually be looking at ourselves in a distorted mirror. AI throws back at us questions we thought were settled:

  • What does it mean to learn?

  • What does it mean to understand?

  • What do we value most: speed, empathy, creativity, or logic?

Perhaps the real contribution of AI will not be to surpass our capacities, but to force us to reflect more deeply on our own.

The future is not only about defining the intelligence of machines, but about daring to explore our own intelligence with humility and depth.
