The Law Project MOOC : an open educational source for students to discover Law in an interactive way

Did you know that legal literacy is crucial in empowering citizens to understand their rights, participate in society, and navigate complex legal systems?

Legal knowledge isn't just for lawyers or courtrooms—it impacts all areas of life, from social media interactions to employment contracts and consumer rights. For teachers looking to bring this vital knowledge into the classroom, the European project Law in Everyday Life has the perfect solution.

The MOOC of Law Project offers an innovative educational resource designed to promote legal literacy among students between 14 and 18 years old. This platform supports teachers in teaching the fundamental principles of law, human rights, and democracy through a variety of engaging resources. It is an indispensable component of a broader educational effort aimed at fostering legal awareness, critical thinking, and active citizenship. The MOOC complements the other project resources already presented and available on the project website, namely the student textbook, teacher manual and teacher training program. They are all available in English, Croatian, French, Italian and Portuguese.

How is The Law Project MOOC Structured?

The platform is designed to cater to the needs of both teachers and students through a clear and user-friendly structure. The MOOC is divided in 5 modules, around one hour per module. Here are short descriptions for each module based on the content provided :

  1. Why Law?

This introductory module explores the purpose of law, its different types, and its vital role in society. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of why laws exist and how they help maintain order, protect rights, and promote justice.

This module enhances participants' knowledge of legal frameworks surrounding family relationships, human rights (especially the Convention on the Rights of the Child), and human sexuality rights. It also explores how laws impact daily life by shaping individuals' rights and responsibilities.

  3. How We Make Law

Focusing on the law-making process, this module explains how policies evolve into laws, the steps a bill goes through to become law, and the crucial role citizens play in influencing legislation. Participants will explore the relationship between governance and public participation.

  4. What Does This Have to Do with Me?

This module aims to raise awareness of individual rights and responsibilities, helping young people understand and interpret legal documents. It also covers forms of civic participation, encouraging students to engage more actively in their communities.

  5. Advantages of Knowing the Law

The final module empowers students with essential legal knowledge, fostering a sense of civic responsibility. It highlights the practical benefits of legal literacy, emphasizing how understanding the law can help individuals protect their rights and contribute meaningfully to society.

Each module includes educational methods and tools ranging from video lessons, podcasts, handouts, interactive activities and other appropriate materials which will bring legal literacy closer to students.
