Film Literacy

Since its creation, film has been strongly influencing all categories of the society.

Since its creation, film has been strongly influencing all categories of the society. The moving images taking place before our eyes provoke tears and laugh, ensure a journey through the unknown parts of the world, introduce various cultures and make us identify ourselves with principal characters. It can be said that film directly or indirectly influences our spiritual values by shaping our viewpoints.

According to the definition of the European Commission, film literacy entails  "a level of understanding film, ability to be aware and curious when choosing films; competency in critical watching films and analysing their contents, photography and technical aspects“. This definition should be given the following remark specified by the European expert team of  Cinema Expert Group: "… as well as the ability of manipulating its language and technical resources in the creative production of moving images".

What is a good movie, how do we recognise it and does it influence the society? - these are only some of the questions responded by the film literacy. The film frequently triggers different reactions with spectators, which might be completely opposite - from delight to disappointment. Our perception of a film is influenced by several factors: knowledge, interest, perception of beauty, good, ...

Film literacy knowledge should be attained since the early childhood. The development of information technologies being practically impossible to follow, has brought, besides benefits, negative aspects as well. The availability of contents that are or not proper for the age of the youngest population, makes us conclude that we have to dedicate full attention to the kids and make them develop critical thinking, helm them recognize good and bad quality contents. In early school age, film might be an important tool for strengthening reading and writing skills, as well as development of mental and cognitive capabilities. The significance of this matter is demonstrated by the recommendations of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe to the member states in which, in the chapter “European Film and Youth” it is highlighted that particular attention should be paid to the measures for children and youth:  films they watch, the way they watch them and how they interact with film culture. The goal is not to support films specially produced for young audience, which is a particular subject, but to make this population acquainted with quality film contents and variety and richness of film culture.

Film literacy is inseparable part of media and information literacy. It is very important to establish cooperation between various stakeholders from education, culture-art, economic and political sector, so as to achieve better results in this area.

Film literacy should be spoken about much more.
