The virtual classroom (VC) has been a very familiar teaching and training format since the COVID pandemic. But is it here to stay? While many are returning to the traditional face-to-face classroom, others are embracing the benefits of the virtual classroom: High flexibility and convenience, accessibility, cost effectiveness, interactivity and engagement, global collaboration and broader audience, scalability, and environmental factors.

But what about the challenges that come with a virtual training format? While digital skills are in high demand, there are still many people with little or no digital skills. CEDEFOP found that the share of jobs in the EU (2021) that will require at least basic digital skills is 87%! So what are we doing?

Well, for the transport sector, the GamingDRV project is doing something. The shortage of professional drivers is one of the most pressing issues facing the T&L industry. The need for such developments is evident in examples where virtual CPC training for professional drivers is not yet permitted, but the discussion is growing. In Germany, the cabinet approved changes to the BMDV's professional driver qualification law on May 24.

The Federal Cabinet has approved the draft bill submitted by the Federal Ministry of Digital Affairs and Transport (BMDV) to amend the Professional Driver Qualification Act. The draft amendment to the Professional Driver Qualification Act provides for the introduction of e-learning in the form of digital teaching as part of professional driver training.

Minister Volker Wissing said: "The introduction of digital teaching in professional driver training will make it more modern and flexible, and the profession as a whole more attractive".

Among other things, GamingDRV is developing a virtual classroom concept for driver CPC training with four modules. It also provides an e-learning for trainers of driver CPC training and beyond called "GameTrain". This training module for trainers will provide VET staff with the necessary skills to deliver engaging, activating, inclusive and innovative CPC training. GameTrain is a self-paced e-learning concept that also focuses on the use of gamified learning elements in VET settings, including practical tips on how to transfer a traditional training into the VC.

Are you new to the digital world or the virtual classroom? Do you want to discover the potential of gamified learning in the virtual classroom? Then GameTrain is for you!
