Scoala Gimnaziala ,,I.L.CAragiale,, Sibiu

„Ion Luca Caragiale” School (http://sc16caragiale.ro/ ) is situated in Sibiu (http://romaniatourism.com/sibiu.html ) – old Hermannstadt – in the middle of Romania, at the south of Transylvania province. Our school is attractively looking, having around 550 students and 35 teachers. Aged between 6 – 14, our students attend the primary and secondary school levels. Our school offers two options of study: in Romanian and in German.
Our school used to have two ranges of parallel grades; from the first to the eighth. Besides the regular curriculum, they also have the opportunity of studying English as a foreign language starting from the early age of 6 and, later, the study of a second language (that is German for the Romanian students). The topics and themes that are discussed during the meetings are common and contemporary, in accordance with the needs of every child and young adult sharing the same ecosystem: protecting and preserving the environment and the planet that we all inhabit, tolerance, acceptance and empathy towards the multicultural diversity of our beautiful world etc. Being a district school, it serves families coming from different social and economic environments. On the one hand, many families have migrated from different disadvantaged areas of Romania towards the centre of the country; on the other hand, many unsatisfied parents have migrated to more developed countries of western Europe, leaving theur children with elder relatives. What is more important, is that they are
eager to find out more things about other children and countries in the Europe we all live in, to share their knowledge or broaden their horizon according to other cultures and traditions. The positive experience of collaborating is of great importance for our students’ future life as citizens of Europe.
We desire for our students a school that can form useful skills and competences in a society that is interconnected on many levels. Thus, developing speaking and communicating skills is as important as developing ITC skills. Moreover, our school has an ITC room equiped with new generation computers and we offer students optional courses for developing such skills. Also, we wish to discover how we could employ these skills for our universal and dynamic environment. The diversity of ethnic minorities in our area (in Transylvania live amongst Romanians Saxons and Hungarians) as well as the distinguished cultural life of our city, Sibiu (the host of the International Theatre Festival and of Astra Film Festival) offer our students a great opportunity to experience a multicultural society and due to this, their eagerness to expand their Romanian citizenship and to become global citizens.
So we intend to extend cooperation with other schools in order to improve the students’ environmental awarness, to teach them how to empathyse with the dynamics of the social and cultural world and deal with the problems of the contemporary world, to help them find proper solutions and motivate them to be involved.
