City of Helsinki Finnish Adult Education Centre (Helsingin työväenopisto)

City of Helsinki Finnish Adult Education Centre is the biggest liberal adult education institution in Finland. The Adult Education Centre has altogether eleven branches around the city. The main building is located in the Kallio district. The Centre also organizes many courses in schools, community centers and cultural centers around the city. Most of the courses are organized in the evenings but there are also many daytime and weekend courses. Especially elderly people, immigrants, unemployed and stay-at-home parents take part in the daytime courses.
There are three major subject categories taught in the Adult Education Centre: Languages and academic subjects, Arts, and Crafts. Altogether, around 35 000 students study in the Adult Education Centre, which organizes more than 4,500 courses and some 200 lectures every year. The biggest group of the subjects taught is languages. There are also many courses in crafts, visual arts, literature, drama, music, home economics, physical education and dance, information technology, seafaring and navigation, and social sciences, such as history, philosophy and psychology. The age-limit to take part in the courses is 16 years, but there are also courses organized for families with children.
There are about 50 members of teaching staff, who work in the Adult Education Centre full-time. In addition to this, there are over 1,000 part-time teachers. All of the teachers are experts in their own fields of subject.
