CEPA Fuerteventura Norte (from now on CEPAFTVN) is an Education Centre for Adults in “Puerto del Rosario” (Canary Islands-Fuerteventura-Spain) and ruled by the Department of Education of the Canarian Government. We are ten teachers and we work in four different places to cover all the municipalities of the North of the island of Fuerteventura.

The title of the Project “Step by step, we go” refers to the evolution in Adult Education, that we are undergoing. In the last few years the profile of our students has changed due to the flow of migrants and the advances of the Educational policy of the Canary Islands. At first, Adult Centres were created to cover those students who, for diverse reasons, did not finish or did not start their studies, to give them a second opportunity to incorporate them in the “World of work” or simply redo their studies for their own satisfaction (Older men and women). Nowadays, we add to this group, Spanish residents who are not native Spanish speakers that wish to obtain the title, so they can enter “the world of work”, these being 35% of the total group.

The other 2/3 of the students, who in the last years, have been incorporated in our centre, there are students with a very different profile, immigrants who do not speak Spanish, people without qualifications or people who have them, but are not integrated in our society. Nowadays they are 2/3 of our students and this percentage is increasing as the flow of migration and the economic crisis deepen (non native Spanish students + iIliterate people).

Nevertheless, there is a common characteristic to all of them. It is the irregular attendance, the low motivation, the difference of ages and interests and the lack of knowledge about the new technologies, which constitutes the 95% of the student body because they are adults and with low economical resources.

For this reason, the main objective of this project is to know the Adults Education System in other Educational Systems, where the integration of the immigrants is done in a favourable condition that their level of dropout is rather low. In this sense, we would be pleased to get to know those other models so as to reduce ours.

Our aim is the mobility of 4 teachers within the Erasmus Programme (KA104) to learn new methodologies in the Adult teaching, which might offer us a different point of view to motivate to our so diverse students to finish their studies and to get integrated in our culture acquiring linguistic competences and knowledge about new technologies.

The activities will be held in two centers of recognized prestige with courses of integration and with a great experience dealing with immigrants. Regarding the activities, they will basically consist of “job shadowing “.

To sum up, we expect that our experience serves us well to improve the educational quality as far as the population residing in Fuerteventura is concerned. Besides, thanks to our project “Step by step, we go” our advances might contribute to show improvements in our Adult Educational Centres, which could lead to new future cooperations in European projects for the benefit of the Educational Community and local Associations.
