Training & Capacity Building in Malta for Erasmus+ GEL PROJECT

Our recent training in Malta, led by Men Against Violence (MAV), provided a rich, collaborative space to confront issues surrounding gender equality. Participants from ASexórate, Meraki, and the broader community explored fundamental topics over five days, including the origins of misogyny, patriarchal structures, and the evolving role of sexology in health education and prevention.

Day 1 kicked off with foundational discussions on the roots of misogyny and gender inequality, emphasizing historical contexts and diverse country examples. The group tackled questions around patriarchal norms and the societal “backlash” against gender equality in Europe, while evening reflections encouraged participants to apply insights to their own countries and networks.

The second day extended this dialogue to the public, focusing on how concepts in sexology can contribute to health promotion. Participants from diverse backgrounds engaged in open discussions about the relevance of inclusive vocabulary and practical steps to engage learners. This was followed by cultural events including poetry readings and live music, linking gender topics with the arts to engage the local community meaningfully.

Mid-week sessions examined gender-based violence, legal frameworks, and effective approaches to documenting and assessing risks like femicide. Engaging in activities on bystander intervention, participants learned about prevention strategies applicable in workplaces and schools.

Day 4 took a closer look at masculinity, addressing issues of toxicity, identity, and ways forward. Attendees delved into practices for engaging men and boys in the conversation, which continued into Day 5 with a visit to the Commissioner of Domestic Violence and final discussions on long-term strategies.

Our next training session will be held in Spain at the end of November, and we’re thrilled to announce that all content will be consolidated into a Moodle course, expanding the reach of our collective knowledge to a wider audience.
