Working with learners from disadvantaged backgrounds


Nowadays, teachers and adult education trainers face very diverse profiles of students from vulnerable backgrounds and groups in risk of exclusion (refugees, migrants, learners with special needs, difficult socio-economic situations, women dealing with domestic violence, persons with literacy challenges, seniors, etc)
This course is for teachers wanting to learn about alternative methodologies that can be used to adapt teaching to the needs of learners from vulnerable backgrounds. They will experience examples of activities that can be designed to support increasing diversity in nowadays society focusing on learning-by-doing and interactive exercises in small groups.
The course is also suitable for non-teaching staff, as it focuses on improving soft skills such as empathy, tolerance, communication etc.
- Reflect on the different situations that lead to marginalization, social exclusion and poverty.
- Build empathy, trust and improve active listening skills
- Learn how to break the barriers and stereotypes regarding learners from disadvantaged backgrounds

The participants will learn about organisations working with different disadvantaged learners. The participants will learn how to understand and adapt to the realities of their disadvantaged learners such as migrants, refugees, asylum seekers and learners from low socio-economic backgrounds.
LEARNING OUTCOME 2: Acquire knowledge and skills on how to promote tolerance, diversity and critical thinking
Teachers and educational staff need to continuously develop their personal and social skills in order to be able to promote inclusive education. By means of experiential learning methodology, they will experience exercises on how to promote positive values towards a more inclusive society.
LEARNING OUTCOME 3: Acquiring the ability to conduct active learning classes focused on promoting social inclusion
The participants will understand the benefits of using active learning methodologies for disadvantaged learners. Also, they will learn how to adapt them in order to include the whole group.
LEARNING OUTCOME 4: Learn how to deliver exercises that increase motivation and engagement
Boosting motivation and engagement is crucial for creating a positive and inclusive learning atmosphere. The participants will learn different active learning exercises as well as outdoor education techniques in order to motivate learners, including disadvantaged learners.
LEARNING OUTCOME 5: Learn new creative and innovative teaching techniques
The participants will experience and learn different types of creative teaching techniques (art-based techniques, collaboration-based learning etc.) that help to promote inclusive education.
