Empowering Teachers in the Digital Era: The I-TEEN Toolkit for Adult Education

The European project I-TEEN was created to promote the development of the eight key competences defined by the European Union through the use of ICT, targeting adolescents both in disadvantaged situations and not. Although it is primarily aimed at the secondary school environment, its significance extends well beyond youth education, reaching into a crucial area of adult education: the continuous professional development of teachers.
One of the main outputs of the project is an educational toolkit designed for teachers, a resource specifically developed to support adults working daily in increasingly complex and digitalized educational contexts. The toolkit offers methodological tools, ready-to-use activities, downloadable materials, and practical guidance for integrating digital technologies into teaching while addressing highly relevant social, relational, and personal themes.
Structured around ten thematic chapters, the toolkit guides educators through topics such as digital citizenship, bullying prevention, self-esteem, time management, cultural inclusion, environmental awareness, and career guidance. Each module is designed for direct use in the classroom and includes theoretical introductions, lesson plans, games, quizzes, free digital tools, and cooperative activities. For example, in the chapter on cultural diversity, teachers can create a digital art gallery to encourage intercultural reflection among students; in the creativity module, they are encouraged to facilitate the production of short thematic films using smartphones.
All materials are available free of charge and in four languages (Italian, English, Spanish, and Slovenian) on the project’s online platform: https://i-teenplatform.eu. In addition to the teacher toolkit, the site also hosts an interactive course for students and a downloadable educational board game designed to stimulate the eight European key competences through play and collaboration.
At a time when the role of adult educators is increasingly challenged by digital transformation, multiculturalism, and the need to develop soft skills in young people, I-TEEN stands as a valuable resource for adult education as well. The project offers transferable pedagogical models and updated content that can be adapted and integrated into professional development paths for teachers, educators, trainers, and school leaders.
