Sustainable International Business: Simulations as a learning tool

The SOS IB project bridges theory and practice with tools for sustainable international business.

As the digital landscape continues to evolve, education is witnessing unprecedented changes. Among these advancements, simulations have emerged as a tool combining technology with immersive, hands-on learning experiences. These tools represented a shift in how knowledge is imparted, moving from passive consumption to active engagement, and aligning with the demands of a globalizing and interconnected world.

E-learning is more than the mere integration of technology into traditional education, it is a purposeful strategy to enhance the quality of teaching and learning. With its flexibility in time, space, and communication, e-learning has unlocked opportunities that were once unthinkable. Simulations, as a subset of e-learning, bring unique advantages, offering students a chance to:

  • Immerse in authentic learning scenarios: Simulations replicate complex real-world environments, enabling learners to experiment with actions and decisions in a safe, controlled space.
  • Connect theory with practice: By making abstract concepts tangible, simulations help students translate theoretical knowledge into practical applications, fostering a deeper understanding.
  • Foster autonomy and engagement: Interactive simulations adapt to individual learner performance, promoting independence, critical thinking, and active involvement.

The SOS IB Project: Innovation in Learning

The Simulation of Sustainable International Business (SOS IB) project utilized cutting-edge digital tools to simulate the complexities of international business. It was designed to bridge educational gaps and enhance the internationalization of small higher education institutions through innovative approaches. Its primary achievements included:

  1. A Digital Platform:The project developed a platform that enables educators to create and share intuitive digital simulations of financial, accounting, management, and legal scenarios. This platform simplifies content creation, making it accessible to educators across disciplines.
  2. Pre-Developed Simulated Cases:Ready-to-use case studies were designed to reflect real-world challenges in sustainable international business. These cases empower students to confront and resolve issues such as ethical decision-making, resource management, and cross-cultural communication.
  3. An Engaging Digital Simulation Game:This mobile game invites players to step into the roles of decision-makers.. The gamified approach not only enhances engagement but also reinforces learning outcomes.
  4. Impact Study on Internationalisation:The project conducted a small case study on how e-learning affects internationalisation at lecturers', students' and institutional level in smaller higher education institutions.

The SOS IB platform has proven to be an innovative and engaging medium, offering a host of benefits:

  • Safe Experimentation: Students test strategies and make decisions without the fear of real-world consequences.
  • Global Perspective: By simulating international business scenarios, students gain valuable insights into cross-border challenges and opportunities.
  • Skill Development: Simulations hone critical skills such as problem-solving, teamwork, communication, and adaptability—skills that are essential in today’s workplace.

The SOS IB project underscores the importance of collaboration in driving educational innovation. By fostering partnerships between institutions, educators, and learners, the initiative has demonstrated the potential for shared resources to transform teaching and learning practices on a global scale.

The platform developed through this project as well as project outcomes and results are accessible at project webpage, offering educators and students alike a resource for dynamic, simulation-based learning.
