Sun in the Age: Journey into Mindfulness among European Countries in the Erasmus+ Project.

In contemporary times, it is necessary to reflect on mindfulness and its benefits. Among the projects involved in the Erasmus+ program, Sun in the Age stands out. This project aims to delve into and study the theme through a journey across several European countries (Lithuania, Spain, Greece, Italy, Germany, Poland, North Macedonia) to explore different realities, approaches, and theories.
Polygonal, a social promotion association, is the Italian partner participating in the project.
Thanks to its techniques, mindfulness, generally defined as self-awareness in the here and now with a non-judgmental approach, impacts various aspects of an individual's life, from physical well-being to mental health, and from the professional to the private sphere. Additionally, it positively influences communities, making them stronger.
While mindfulness practices have been recognized in Europe, their availability can vary from country to country based on costs and accessibility.
Understanding the diverse mindfulness techniques in different European cultures can facilitate the exchange of information on innovative and successful practices. It can also assist policymakers in supporting the integration of mindfulness into healthcare, education, workplaces, and research.
Through the information gathered and interviews with experts conducted in each participating country, investigating the potential benefits of mindfulness, it is evident that there is a common thread across all involved countries, with some nuances. Knowing and practicing mindfulness (including meditation, yoga, breathing exercises, etc.) reduces stress and anxiety, stabilizes the emotional sphere, improves attention and concentration, aids in solving sleep-related issues, promotes physical well-being, and brings advantages in communication with others. Individuals can rely on experts with a personalized mindfulness journey, but they can also begin to familiarize themselves with it individually through books and audiovisual materials.
In Italy, Polygonal has interviewed some professionals to better understand mindfulness practices. Mindfulness is primarily practiced in holistic centers with the main goal of improving the quality of life. Meditation is one of its characteristic aspects, allowing us to observe and understand elements related to our perceptual sphere and daily life. When meditating, we activate the parasympathetic branch of the autonomic nervous system and inhibit the sympathetic branch, helping us manage stress better. Chemically, during deep meditation, certain endocrine glands produce neurotransmitters and hormones that confer feelings of pleasure and well-being. Developing full mindfulness requires daily cultivation of meditation, initially relying on an experienced guide. In doing so, we can manage any emotional storm and live better in the social and environmental contexts around us.
Although the path is clear, there are obstacles to face, including the cost of resources, a lack of complete professionalism among practitioners towards users, and the unclear definition of mindfulness. Delving into these topics through discussion and dialogue is the first step in recognizing their precious value.
