Project HER[AI]TAGE: First meeting in Croatia

The project consortium behind Erasmus+ project HER[AI]TAGE met in-person in Croatia to discuss how AI can be used to preserve culture and nature.

How can artificial intelligence contribute to preserving intangible cultural heritage and protecting the environment? This question lies at the core of the HER[AI]TAGE project, where we have joined forces — Media NGO Kultivator from Croatia, Public Open University Čakovec from Croatia, Croatian-Culture Association Pomurje from Slovenia, and Town library of Novi Sad from Serbia — to explore innovative solutions.

We recently held our first in-person meeting in Čakovec to establish key project implementation steps. During this gathering, we visited the Treasury of Međimurje, where we examined how technology can help raise awareness of the importance of safeguarding both cultural heritage and the natural environment in a captivating and engaging manner. In the visitor centre Between two waters we found out more about the love Međimurje has towards its natural heritage and the need to preserve it. Our portion of the study trip concluded at Mađerka hill where we all experienced our Međimurje and how beautiful and green it is!

In the course of the HER[AI]TAGE project, we aim to interview more than 60 older adults to collect their personal stories related to intangible cultural heritage, as well as their generational knowledge on environmental protection. By employing advanced AI technologies, we will illustrate these stories, convert them into audio recordings, and compile them into a unified interactive digital collection accessible to all generations. Additionally, we plan to develop three short online courses designed to facilitate the use of AI in adult education, heritage preservation, and environmental protection.

Although the project has only recently begun, we look forward to sharing our initial outcomes with you soon!
