My Story
A few months ago, the Agency for VET and Adult Education suggested that I become an EPALE Ambassador, which is how I joined the EPALE community. I was delighted by this opportunity to further my learning and share my thoughts on media literacy and the impact of the internet and digital technologies on education and society.
In a way, EPALE is my first community as a lecturer because I am not a traditional teacher. I don't stand in front of a class every day and give out grades. My work is more like nomadic learning: I visit schools and libraries as a guest, lead workshops on media literacy and talk to students and adults about their online experiences, some of which they are not even aware of. Topics include electronic violence, fake news, algorithms that put us in so-called information bubbles and intrusive advertising. There is a special focus on how to protect yourself from these influences.
EPALE has given me insight into what adult education looks like at a European level and provided me with a broader context on various related topics. It has also given me concrete ideas on how to improve my workshops and lectures and make them more practical.
I am especially pleased with the wide range of topics I can write about and the freedom to decide for myself what would be most useful in everyday life. Having been involved in journalism for a long time, I really enjoy researching new topics and consulting different sources on them, and forming my own opinion based on the information I find. For me, this is the most enjoyable way to learn.
Firstly, I decided to explore the world of artificial intelligence, focusing on the issues we need to consider when using tools like ChatGPT. Next, I explored the internet as the largest classroom for adult education. By compiling a list of the most popular websites and channels where adults can learn anything they want, mostly for free — from YouTube to Harvard — I aimed to inspire myself and others to take advantage of all the positive opportunities the internet provides. I want to translate everything I have learned through writing — and I am only just starting out — into practice and the workshops I conduct.
EPALE has become a space for me to express myself, grow and connect my own experience with that of the wider European community of educators.
I am particularly looking forward to meeting the other Ambassadors and experiencing the EPALE community in person. I hope that EPALE will continue to inspire us all to never stop learning. In a sense, our community is the embodiment of one of my favourite quotes: 'The greatest lesson I have learned in life is that I still have a lot to learn.'
