Intergreen: training public employees for sustainability

As the INTERGREEN project approaches its conclusion in February 2025, we take a moment to reflect on its impact and achievements. Funded under the Erasmus+ KA220-VET program, INTERGREEN aimed to equip public sector employees with the necessary green skills to tackle environmental challenges effectively.
INTERGREEN sought to address the urgent need for sustainability expertise in local governance by providing vocational education and training (VET) tailored to municipal employees. The project focused on:
- Developing a structured training program for municipal staff.
- Creating an engaging board game to facilitate experiential learning and problem-solving, both in physical and digital form.
- Delivering an interactive online course to ensure accessibility and scalability of knowledge.
Partnership
The project brought together a diverse consortium from six European countries:
- France (GIP FIPAN – Coordinator)
- North Macedonia (Eco Logic)
- Portugal (Municipality of Lousada)
- Cyprus (SYNTHESIS Center for Research and Education)
- Italy (CIAPE - Centro Italiano per l'Apprendimento Permanente)
- Greece (Kentro Epagelmatikis Katartisis DIAS EPE)
Through collaborative efforts, INTERGREEN designed a comprehensive curriculum tailored to municipal needs, incorporating real-life case studies and innovative learning methodologies such as design thinking and use of games for learning.
Outcomes
The project successfully developed and implemented:
- A Specialized Training Program. Providing municipal employees with practical, actionable knowledge on sustainability.
- A Board Game. A unique learning tool that encourages collaborative problem-solving for sustainable urban development.
- A Digital version of the game. This simplified version of the game will allow employees to play alone.
- An Online Course. Making green skills training widely accessible beyond the immediate project participants.
Impact and sustainability
By equipping municipal employees with green skills, INTERGREEN has empowered local governments to take a proactive role in sustainability initiatives. The project’s methodology and resources will continue to serve as a blueprint for future training programs in sustainable municipal management.
As INTERGREEN concludes, its work will persist through the continued implementation of its training modules, integration of sustainability strategies in municipal policies, and the networking opportunities created among European municipalities. The game will continue to be a tool that can be used by anyone who wants to acquire a more sustainable mindset.
While INTERGREEN officially ends in February 2025, its impact will continue to grow. The training materials, board game, and online course will remain available, fostering further knowledge transfer and international cooperation in the field of municipal sustainability.
