The EcoDigital Project Curriculum: Taking action for reducing the environmental impact of digitalisation
In today's digital age, our reliance on technology is unprecedented, but so are its environmental consequences. From e-waste to carbon footprints, the digital revolution has left a significant mark on our planet. Recognizing the urgency of this issue, the EcoDigital project, funded by Erasmus+ KA2, has embarked on a mission to educate and empower the next generation through its innovative EcoDigital Curriculum.
The EcoDigital Project:
EcoDigital: Taking action for reducing the environmental impact of digitalization is an Erasmus+ KA2 project that spans from November 2022 to April 2025. At its core, the project aims to raise awareness about the environmental challenges posed by digital waste and foster positive behavioral changes, especially among young people. By integrating eco-conscious digital education into school curriculums, EcoDigital seeks to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to address the environmental impact of digitalization.
The EcoDigital Curriculum:
One of the key outcomes of the EcoDigital project is the development of a comprehensive educational program: the EcoDigital Curriculum. Designed for students from primary to secondary education levels, this curriculum offers a structured approach to understanding and mitigating the environmental effects of digitalization.
Modules of the EcoDigital Curriculum:
Digitalization in Daily Life (Module 1): This module provides an introduction to the omnipresence of digitalization in our lives, emphasizing its various dimensions and impacts.
Cloud: What is it and what does it entail? (Module 2): Offering a technical yet accessible explanation, Module 2 delves into the concept of cloud computing, helping students grasp its significance in modern technology.
Cloud services and tools (Module 3): Module 3 equips students with practical knowledge of cloud-based services and tools, empowering them to navigate the digital landscape effectively.
Environmental impact of digitalization (Module 4): This module sheds light on the environmental repercussions of digitalization, particularly focusing on e-waste and pollution.
Digital Carbon Footprint (Module 5): Module 5 provides students with actionable strategies to calculate and reduce their digital carbon footprint, encouraging responsible digital habits.
Activism & Larping for sustainable digitalization (Module 6): Module 6 offers two distinct approaches to activism: environmental advocacy and Live Action Role-Playing (LARPing), fostering creativity and engagement in sustainable digital practices.
The EcoDigital Curriculum isn't just a collection of lessons; it's a transformative tool for educators and students alike. By integrating environmental sustainability and digital literacy into formal education settings, the curriculum empowers teachers to facilitate meaningful discussions and activities around eco-conscious digital practices. Simultaneously, students are encouraged to become active participants in shaping a sustainable digital future, equipped with the knowledge and skills to effect positive change in their communities.
In an era where digitalization is omnipresent, the EcoDigital Curriculum stands as a beacon of hope, guiding the next generation towards a more sustainable future. By instilling a sense of environmental responsibility and digital citizenship, this innovative educational program paves the way for a generation of informed and empowered digital citizens ready to tackle the challenges of tomorrow. With the EcoDigital Curriculum, the journey towards a greener, more sustainable digital world begins in the classroom today.
