Safer in the clouds: risks and common mistakes identified

Since the launch of the new project Go Cloud! Go Secure! in November 2024, we have been busy working on the very first project result.
As part of our second work package, in-depth interviews with cloud security experts and practitioners were performed to gain practical insights and valuable suggestions for the Cloud Security Implementation Matrix (CSI Martix) which we intend to develop.
The consortium members conducted interviews with 12 key cloud security experts in February and March, who identified some common weak points and top security risks. Here is what they have found:

The common weak points are the following:

In order to eliminate the risks arriving from the cloud environment, the experts recommend to take the following steps:
✅Using international standards like ISO27001 and NIST,
✅ Turning on Multi-Factor Authentication for all users,
✅ Training team on security,
✅ Regularly checking and updating cloud systems,
✅ Using tools like Cloud Security Posture Management to monitor setup.
Based on these results, the next step for the project members is to create the Cloud Security Implementation Matrix, a framework to identify and assess cloud threats and risks.
