Thematic Week: Team of Art - a museum accessible to all

Team of Art accompanies learners with little or no qualifications and with special needs in discovering works of art.

[Translation : EPALE France]

Team of Art accompanies learners with little or no qualifications and with special needs in discovering works of art.

Inclusion of disadvantaged audiences remains a major challenge for the museum sector. Inclusivity begins with the issue of accessibility. It does not stop at the accessibility of buildings and the adaptation of visits for disabled visitors. It also concerns museographic work and the development of online offers and adapted digital tools. These tools can be great assets for people with little or no access to culture, if done in an inclusive way. For people with reading difficulties, dyslexia, learning disabilities, visual, hearing or intellectual impairments, works of art are still difficult to access.

Team of Art accompanies these audiences in their discovery of works of art through a scripted presentation, in the form of a linear narrative, with a level of language that is easy to read and understand. Access to art and culture is a basic skill and provides additional learning to reading and writing. The question of the accessibility of an image, both in terms of how it is felt and understood, arises in both physical and digital form. To be truly inclusive, image accessibility must include people with reading difficulties, dyslexia, learning disabilities, visual, hearing or intellectual impairments.

Team of Art aims to achieve several objectives. Firstly, the implementation of a narrative and visual approach in the presentation of artworks for low-skilled and unskilled learners with special needs. We also want to combine access to European culture through the acquisition of basic skills. The project's target audiences generally have little or no access to books and cultural heritage, so our challenge is to combine an accessible, narrated and interactive presentation of the artworks with language that is "easy to read and understand". Finally, through this project, we want to encourage innovative forms of cultural mediation and training using digital tools.

To this end, Team of Art has decided to bring together on a website accessible to all:

  • a virtual exhibition that will present more than 120 animated and scrolling works of art by famous European artists covering a wide range of artistic periods, styles and techniques;
  • an accessible glossary of the main artistic terms, illustrated and accompanied by videos in sign language;
  • 10 educational files that will allow you to study the artworks presented;
  • 30 practical files with advice for educators, workshop tips and tutorials to help them use the resources created in their professional activity;
  • a teaching implementation guide that aims to answer general and practical questions: What are the difficulties that can prevent one from approaching and understanding a work of art? How can the presentation of a work of art be made useful for the accessibility of its composition and its cultural significance? By what process, vocabulary, narration can I encourage people to approach the work to optimise the experience and enable understanding by an audience with few or no qualifications?
