What is H5P?

H5P is an abbreviation for HTML5 Package, and aims to make it easy for everyone to create, share and reuse interactive HTML5 content. Interactive videos, interactive presentations, quizzes, interactive timelines.

H5P content is responsive and mobile-friendly, which means that users will experience the same rich, interactive content on computers, smartphones, and tablets alike.

Why to use H5P?

Interactive content can be a game-changer (quite literally) when it comes to Distance Learning engagement. The experience from various courses with adults show that adults from all age groups like well-done interactive and multimedia-based content.

Especially, in Flipped Learning² 3.0 environments in the Individual Learning Space is an asset in content creation. The variety of options offered makes it easier for course creators to implement the intended content in an appealing and efficient way.

Examples

To give you an idea what can be done, we present two examples here (taken from currently implemented adult training courses).

The first example is about of hotspots. It is taken from a training course in the frame of an LTTA (Learning-Teaching-Training event) for an Erasmus+ project (E4ALL  2020-1-PL01-KA204-082020).

The second example is a simulation as training content. The example origins from the CICERO training course (CICERO Erasmus+ Project 2018-1-SE01-KA204-039051). The application simulates the sharpening of an JPeG image (using an image editing tool). Moving the slider, you see the change in the contrast and the development of artifacts in the image.

Some technical information¹

H5P is based on HTML5 content. This means all features of HTML5 can be used. CSS3's support is also assured. H5P supports displaying content within iframes and divs. Iframes have the benefit of losing default styles from the site itself, which may at times collide with the styles used in an H5P. H5Ps rendered in div might inherit styling from the site, and allows the site to specify style overrides for the H5P content as well.
