The ABC of Environmental Learning 5
Mountain landscapes are more than dramatic backdrops, they are powerful learning environments. The webinar series The ABC of Environmental Learning 5 brings together educators, researchers, mountaineers, and community practitioners. It explores how learning takes place in the context of the mountains: from Arctic outdoor education to student expeditions in the American West, from Himalayan ascents to Alpine community action.
Why mountains?
Mountains make global challenges visible. Climate change, biodiversity loss, tourism pressures, migration, and shifting livelihoods are intensified and tangible in highland regions. At the same time, mountains invite humility, resilience and deep connection to place.
Their verticality, exposure, and ecological sensitivity offer opportunities for reflection and learning. They illustrate that local peaks are inseparable from global systems and that sustainable futures are grounded in reciprocal relationship with the landscape we inhabit.
Between April 7 and 17, 2026, we will join via Zoom to hear from speakers who will highlight the mountains as places of embodied learning, knowledge co-creation, and transformative educational practice.
You can find more detailed information about the talks here. All lectures will be 90 min long and held in English.

Mountains as classrooms: Inspiring new paths in adult learning
The initiative The ABC of Environmental Learning 5 offers a timely and meaningful opportunity for adult educators to rethink learning through the lens of place. Mountain environments remind us that education is not only cognitive, but also experiential, relational, and deeply connected to real-world challenges.
At a moment when issues such as climate change and sustainability demand holistic understanding, this series brings valuable international perspectives and practical insights. It highlights how learning can emerge from direct engagement with environments that both inspire and challenge us.
For adult educators, this is more than a webinar series—it is an invitation to strengthen approaches that foster critical thinking, resilience, and responsibility toward the world we share. The diversity of speakers ensures relevance across contexts, including community education and lifelong learning.
I encourage you to register and take part in this exchange of knowledge and experience. I will be following the series as well and look forward to the insights it will bring.
