The European Agenda for Adult Learning network is made up of adult education stakeholders who have been working for 10 years to improve access to education for adults with a low level of qualifications.

The European Agenda for Adult Learning, set up by the European Commission in 2012, is a network of 33 coordinators implementing action plans in different European countries with the aim of improving access to training for low-skilled adults. It is part of the European Skills Agenda, launched in 2016 and renewed on 1 July 2020 by the European Commission. In France, the scheme is coordinated by the Erasmus+ France / Education Formation Agency. It is entitled AEFA. The AEFA is governed by a steering committee made up of the major French stakeholders in vocational training, employment and integration.

For the past 10 years, this network has been working on issues relating to access to training and skills development. Through experiments in innovative practices conducted with experts throughout France, the French chapter of the AEFA provides professionals with guides and operational tools to promote access to training for adults who are most isolated from it.

These resources help to advance knowledge and practice in relation to various priorities:

  • Recognising and promoting cross-disciplinary skills
  • Combating illiteracy
  • Developing in-company training in lifelong learning practices
  • Contributing to digital inclusion and responsible use of digital technology for all audiences

To celebrate this anniversary, on 10 December 2024 the AEFA brought together 96 adult education professionals for a day of discussion entitled “10 years of the AEFA: achievements & prospects” at La Bellevilloise in Paris.

During the day, participants discussed strategic themes such as cross-disciplinary skills, in-company training, digital inclusion and European cooperation.

The aim of this event was to highlight the AEFA scheme, its strengths and its originality, and to get a wide range of players working together to create a new dynamic. The day also provided an opportunity to highlight the synergy of European funding, with a presentation of the EPALE platform and Erasmus+ mobility in the adult education sector.

The event generated particularly rich exchanges, fuelled by the diverse range of experiences and expertise brought together. Over the course of the day, six participative workshops attracted the interest and active participation of professionals. We hope that these workshops have also helped to strengthen the collaborative dynamic between all these stakeholders.

The day was also an opportunity to share best practice, with contributions from our Belgian and Italian counterparts, testimonials from users and feedback from experts on AEFA’s flagship projects, such as the RECTEC reference framework for assessing cross-disciplinary skills and a plea for responsible use of digital technology.

The diversity and commitment of the AEFA network were amply represented by the 30 speakers, experts, partners, project leaders, etc. who led the discussions throughout the day.

For 10 years, the AEFA has been working to promote cooperation between French and European partners to improve access to adult education. This event opened up new perspectives and a strong desire to continue working together towards this goal in the years to come.
