Digital Storytelling: the power of storytelling

According to the RAE, an account can be defined as: Knowledge that is given, generally in detail, of a fact:

  1. Knowledge given, usually in detail, of a fact.
  2. Narration, story.
  3. Discursive reconstruction of certain events interpreted in favour of an ideology or a political movement.

But a story is not only a perfect tool to narrate facts, entertaining, manipulating or training the reader. By sharing stories, we contribute to the enrichment of people, to the empowerment of those who often may not have or find their voice. We can engage citizens in actions aimed at supporting positive change, transmitting values or leading to reflection. In short: stories play a fundamental role in lifelong learning.

StoryCollab, a non-profit organisation that uses first-person storytelling to inspire individuals and organisations and equip them with the resources to use first-person storytelling as a tool for social change, knows a lot about this. 

As they explain on their website: "Our mission is to support organisations and communities by facilitating powerful first-person stories in transformative participatory processes. We collaborate with organisations and their storytellers to create media that educates, advocates, promotes wellbeing and fosters leadership and community. We help people identify the stories they want to tell, in their own voices and with accessible tools. We strive to amplify these everyday voices through the stories, podcasts, videos and story maps that emerge from our Collabs, with storytellers and organisations, we seek to engage audiences in a way that encourages reflection and action for positive social change at local, national and international levels.

This belief in the power of storytelling is embodied in a series of one-hour webinars that address storytelling related to different sectors:
