According to the Dutch prison section functional illiteracy is apparent among prison inmates. Therefore a pilot has been set up in a number of penitentiaries. The Literacy Screener, an online test, is used to obtain an indication of the literacy level of the inmate. When the test results show potential literacy difficulties the inmate is matched with a volunteer who provides one-on-one literacy coaching and training. The volunteer is trained for this task by The Dutch Reading and Writing Foundation (Stichting Lezen & Schrijven) and receives support from a professional teacher. The inmates can continue with the literacy coaching after their detention period has ended.
