1995-ben az UNESCO november 16-át a tolerancia nemzetközi napjává nyilvánította. Ennek a napnak a célja, hogy felhívja a figyelmet az elfogultság veszélyeire és mások kultúrájának tiszteletének a fontosságára, az univerzális egyetemi jogokra és az alapvető szabadságjogra.

Az EPALE-nál elismerjük a felnőttképzés és –oktatás jelentőségét a tolerancia előmozdításában. A tolerancia segítheti a migránsokat és a hátrányos helyzetű csoportokat a társadalomba való beilleszkedésbe és nyitottabbá teheti a társadalmat más kultúrák elfogadására, továbbá segíthet ledönteni a sztereotípiákat és megszabadulni az előítéletektől, valamint hozzájárul a tanulók kulturális tudatosságának erősödéséhez.
