Safe Space Creators

“Safe Space Creators” empowered youth workers across Europe with anti-bullying, inclusion and well-being tools to build safer, resilient communities.

From Awareness to Action: Empowering Youth Workers to Build Safer and More Inclusive Communities

In a time when young people across Europe are increasingly affected by bullying, social exclusion, and mental health challenges, the role of youth workers has never been more crucial. Our Erasmus+ project was created as a response to this reality not only to raise awareness, but to equip youth workers and volunteers with the tools, confidence, and inspiration to create real change in their communities. Bringing together participants from Portugal, The Netherlands, Poland and Turkey, the project “Safe Space Creators” (KA153, the project is supported by Nederlands Jeugdinstituut) combined a Training Course and a follow-up Seminar, forming a dynamic learning journey rooted in non-formal education, collaboration, and innovation. More than just a training, it became a laboratory of ideas, where participants explored how youth work can evolve to meet today’s complex social challenges. At the heart of the project was an experiential approach. Youth workers did not simply learn about inclusion and well-being they experienced, tested, and co-created solutions.

Through methods such as:

  • Theatre of the Oppressed
  • Role-play and simulation exercises
  • Digital storytelling and online tools
  • Art-based and nature-based (eco-therapy) activities,

participants developed practical, ready-to-use tools to address bullying, foster emotional resilience, and create safe, inclusive environments for young people.

Equally important was the intercultural dimension. Working in international teams allowed participants to exchange perspectives, challenge assumptions, and build a shared understanding of youth work across Europe. What makes this project truly meaningful is what happened after the activities. Participants returned to their communities not only with new knowledge, but as multipliers of change. They implemented workshops, launched awareness initiatives, and introduced new methods in youth centres, schools, and NGOs.

Sustainability was a central focus from the beginning. The project resulted in practical resources, including a toolkit, handbook of methods and tools, which remain accessible as open educational resources. More importantly, it created a community of practice a network of committed youth workers and organisations who continue to collaborate, share knowledge, and develop new initiatives. This ensures that the project is not an isolated success, but part of a long-term movement towards more inclusive, supportive, and resilient communities across Europe.

This project shows that when youth workers are empowered with the right tools, methodologies, and international cooperation, they can become powerful agents of change. By moving from awareness to action, we are not only addressing the challenges young people face today we are actively shaping a more inclusive and compassionate future for Europe.

It was created:

  • Practical Anti-Bullying & Inclusion Toolkit (A structured collection of tested nonformal education methods combining digital tools, art-based approaches, and green practices. It includes step-by-step workshop plans, facilitation guidelines, and evaluation tools, making it immediately usable by other youth workers).
  • Colour Handbook (This colouring book provides a comprehensive framework for understanding the complexities of bullying and inclusion).
  • Brochure (suggestions)
  • Short guide videos for youth workers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wGCw9_j-PmY  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LwprctR1kWs  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p0I9IxWLzdg
