Advancing Gender Equality in Sport

The GENDERWISE project, co-funded by the Erasmus+ Sport programme, continues to make meaningful progress in addressing gender inequality in sport by supporting the dual careers of young female athletes. With a strong commitment to inclusive education, mentorship, and digital innovation, GENDERWISE is now entering a new and dynamic phase of implementation.

Building on its foundational work, the project is currently focused on the co-creation of educational content that will form the basis of a multilingual MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) platform. This platform is being developed through a participatory process, with input from athletes, coaches, educators, and gender equality experts across six partner countries. It aims to empower users with knowledge and tools to navigate dual career pathways while addressing systemic gender imbalances in sport.

What sets this next phase apart is the emphasis on interactive learning experiences and peer mentoring. Rather than offering static learning materials, the platform will include real-world scenarios, reflective exercises, and opportunities for young women to connect with mentors and role models from the sports sector. These elements are designed to promote critical thinking, confidence building, and the transferability of skills into life beyond sport.

The project also places growing importance on the role of adult educators and sports professionals. By providing accessible training modules and best-practice guidelines, GENDERWISE supports those who play a crucial role in shaping inclusive environments. This cross-sectoral approach ensures that coaches, sports organisations, educational institutions, and policy stakeholders all contribute to a broader culture of gender equity.

In parallel, the consortium is conducting a series of interviews and surveys to deepen its understanding of the challenges and aspirations of young female athletes across Europe. These insights will directly inform both the structure of the digital tools and the upcoming piloting phase.

As GENDERWISE continues to evolve, the project remains a powerful example of how strategic collaboration, digital innovation, and a strong equity focus can create meaningful change. By equipping young women — and the adults who support them — with tools for lifelong learning, leadership, and empowerment, the project is helping reshape the future of sport in Europe.
