This is EXULI, an Erasmus Plus strategic cooperation project, aimed at giving youth workers tools to work with young migrants around their trauma, while being accompanied by psychoanalysts with a Lacanian orientation.

Erasmus Plus is famous for student mobility in Europe, but less well known as a programme supporting the creation and impetus of new approaches and methods for social inclusion.

So here is EXULI, an Erasmus Plus project of strategic cooperation, aimed at giving youth workers tools to work with young migrants around their trauma, while being accompanied by psychoanalysts with a Lacanian orientation.

It is a consortium of associations, structures and experts from Italy, France, Greece and Spain and including Pistes Solidaires, our host structure, which is the French partner.

EXULI: what is it?

In today's so-called trauma era, advanced tools and methodologies are needed to deal with the historical phenomenon of migration that is affecting the whole of Europe. Such methodologies respond to the urgent need of these arriving communities of forced migrants (i.e. exiles, exuli), while at the same time enabling the host communities to be better equipped and ready to work towards the creation of genuine conditions of inclusion in different forms.

The, action which aims to overcome a condition of vulnerability that in most cases is often linked to repeated and perpetrated trauma, addresses the marginalisation process of migrants, who are quickly labelled as "disadvantaged" or not conforming to a certain number of norms in the host society. They thus find themselves in an inferior status that is not impartial.

The EXULI project essentially responds to the needs related to the social inclusion of young migrants through a process that combines the tools of non-formal education and Lacanian psychoanalysis. The aim is to enable young migrants to rewrite their history and envision inclusion in society.

This process is intended to provide a sense of continuity within the new host country, taking into account the impossibility of maintaining traditional behaviours and the inevitable differences in what is new (coming from afar or not).

EXULI has developed an educational strategy based on the pedagogical and psychoanalytical use of the narration of trauma through communication tools derived from expressive art. This has indeed made it possible to overcome the barrier presented by the use of language in its definition (lack of details and nuances, of the possibility of associating concepts with feelings and sensations).

To achieve this objective, the partners used expressive tools that went beyond language alone and which made it possible to involve young migrants who were in specific conditions and at specific times in the host country.
