What is Web 2.0?

Web 2.0 has changed the average internet user from being a passive surfer to becoming an active participant.  The level of interaction and participation varies from simply voting in an online poll to contributing to online discussions and forums or even engaging in online communities of practice.

Web 2.0 is about sharing your ideas and opinions. It's about open source applications and free tools for everybody. It's about communicating and collaborating.

Web 2.0 supports the idea of an active and creative learner. As tools for collaboration make the learning process visible, the focus changes from the product to the process. And thus, the teacher's role changes from a distributor of knowledge to a guide on the path of learning and understanding.

During my training sessions on Digital Literacy with teachers I often introduce Web 2.0 tools as excellent tools for teachers to enhance their teaching and further motivate their students. The session is always divided into 2.  In Part 1, I explain what Web 2.0 is and how it transformed internet use.

This is the presentation I use for Part 1 of the session (a general introduction to Web2.0).  In Part 2 I give examples of Web2.0 tools which are great for supporting teaching and learning.

Please feel free to use.
