Sonja Karbon: Be an agent of change

Working with competences requires not only a focus on the learner, but also a look to the future.

Short bio

I am the managing director of KARBON Consulting GmbH, co-founder of the Good Neighbours Cooperative, external lecturer at the University of Applied Sciences and, since 2009, active in the field of education and training in vocational, adult and higher education.

My story of Empowerment

We live in a time when we are all experiencing the effects of current developments. Climate change increases the need for green skills and a reconnection with nature and a mindful approach to the whole ecosystem. Social divisions and even wars in some countries underline the importance of inclusion, strong cooperation as a global community and mutual appreciation. Increasing digitalisation and new technologies driven by artificial intelligence also require an increase in digital skills in order to grow with the digital challenges and not widen the digital divide. Developing and strengthening these skills, such as sustainability skills, social skills and digital skills, cannot be taken for granted, but requires attention.

Education has a central role to play. Working with competences requires not only a focus on the learner, but also a look to the future in order to know which competences need to be developed more intensively in the present.

As a seminar leader and workshop facilitator in adult education, it is therefore very important for me to create a synergy between the present and the future in the different educational programmes, because regardless of the target group, every single person in the learning context is also an "agent of change" for a sustainable future. In education, one of our greatest levers is to promote the development of skills in order to add value and have a positive impact not only on the learners themselves, but also at system level. After all, prioritising those skills that will become increasingly relevant is like planting a seed that will one day grow into a tree and make a positive contribution to its environment.
