LEAP II project in Action: Bridging ESD to Adult Learning and Education in UNESCO Learning Cities

Fostering Education for Sustainable Development by Local Adult Education Policies and Actions

The Objectives of LEAP II, an Erasmus+ KA2 project are

  • to empower the local level of governance to tackle the sustainability issues through increasing their “green/sustainability" skills;

  • to empower the educational ecosystem to work towards sustainability issues by increasing their skills and providing tools for developing “green/sustainability" skills of citizens, namely, adult members of community and

  • to facilitate the adoption of Learning Cities concepts in smaller scale through concrete examples and recommendations.

Target Groups of LEAP II:

  • The primary target group of the project are local authorities (of smaller cities).

  • The secondary target group is the citizens – the addresses of the efforts to raise the green skills.

  • LEAP II project is collaborating with UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL), coordinating GNLC to support UIL’s on-going survey on Lifelong learning for Climate Action at local level from UNESCO Learning Cities within ESD-cluster of GNLC.

Expected project results of LEAP II:

  • Case Studies on Education for Sustainability in Learning Cities to provide concrete examples to local authorities on how to build green skills in learning communities through collaborative knowledge transfer.
  • LEAP II Platform with Series of Micro-learning materials on green skills to create learning opportunities for all citizens and generations. Manual and Recommendations for building of (small scale) Learning Cities to help increase learning and contribute to raising awareness of the importance and benefits of LLL.

In Workpackage 2, selected cities will be examined with quality concerns upon the development of ESD through special actions, other than climate action focused lifelong learning, as initiatives, collaborative platform building, exchange of good practices amongs stakeholders, citizens’ engagement through campaign, festivals, gatherings, LLL-programmes, celebratory events around SD.

The LEAP II Collection of Case Studies on Education for Sustainability in Learning Cities will provide examples of good practice to local authorities on how to build green skills in learning communities through collaborative knowledge transfer.

This collection is based on the examination of 14 selected UNESCO Learning Cities as members of GNLC (Global Network of Learning Cities) cluster of Education for Sustainable Development. Accordingly, LEAP II has collaborated with UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) to support UIL’s on-going survey on Lifelong learning for Climate Action at local level from UNESCO Learning Cities within ESD-cluster of GNLC and to receive the formal support of GNLC coordination.

LEAP II examined the development of ESD through special actions, other than climate action focused lifelong learning, referring to initiatives, collaborative platform building, exchange of good practices amongs stakeholders, citizens’ engagement through campaign, festivals, gatherings, LLL-programmes, celebratory events around SD.

We hope that this collection of city-based cases will demonstrate quality standards learning cities to meet the formerly set goals and principles of UNESCO UIL as building blocks of learning cities.
