Building a Better Future: Intersectional Feminist Perspectives on Climate Change

Climate Change is making our world more dangerous. From increasing catastrophic storms and severe droughts to rising sea levels, it will have a devastating effect on the way we live. The World Health Organisation estimate that an additional 250,000 climate related deaths per year are expected between 2030 and 2050. A changing climate affects everyone, but it is the world’s poorest and those in vulnerable situations, especially women and girls, who will bear the brunt of environmental, economic, and social shocks as gender inequality will impact their ability to adapt.

Women’s unequal participation in decision-making processes and labour markets compound inequalities and often prevent women from fully contributing to climate-related planning, policy-making and implementation. Yet, women can (and do) play a critical role in response to climate change due to their local knowledge of and leadership in e.g. sustainable resource management and/or leading sustainable practices at the household and community level.

Join the discussion on Wednesday 9th September to explore the impact the climate emergency will have on women, and the link between gender inequality and climate change. The online event will feature an expert panel of women who will discuss how we can build a better future, through intersectional feminist perspectives. Intersectional feminism is a movement which recognises that barriers to gender equality vary according to other aspects of a woman's identity, including age, race, sexuality and gender identity, and strives to address a diverse spectrum of women's issues.

The Panel will include:

  • Dr. Emma Woodham, Climate Change Programme Manager, Glasgow Science Centre
  • Ellie Murtagh, Climate Resilience Coordinator, Sniffer
  • Jane Morrison, Trustee at Wellbeing Economy Alliance Scotland
  • Lola Okunrinboye CEnv MIEMA MEI, Environmental Manager, Van Oord
  • Zarina Ahmad, Climate Change & Environment Specialist, CEMVO Scotland

The event will be shaped by the participants. All attendees will have the opportunity to put forward their question and the panel will select the questions in advance to inform the discussion*.

The event will be chaired by YWCA Scotland - The Young Women's Movement and Glasgow Science Centre. YWCA Scotland is a feminist organisation and part of a worldwide movement of women leading change. Glasgow Science Centre is an educational charity that aims to empower the people of Glasgow to make positive changes in their lives and communities through learning and engagement with science; and is running a public engagement programme in support of COP 26, the UN Climate Summit which will be held in Glasgow in November 2021.
