CAREER THEATRE - Method for rethinking one's identity in modern society

Career Theatre (CAT) links an individual’s identity through known metaphor from ancient philosophy that highlights the importance of the process from an individual's first physical birth to second so-called ('psychological birth'). In this respect, this ancient teaching emphasizes that an individual need to invest many contemplative efforts to reach such psychological birth in his life. CAT touches this ancient ambition regarding the development of individual’s identity through the distinction of identity among ‘id’ (social identity) and ‘entity’ (self-identity), advocating that an individual needs to balance both of these two identities as highly as possible.

CAT bases on the concept of selfmobility that metaphorically describes an individual's development in the following way: 'Individual needs to think own thoughts and to go own way.' Selfmobility concretely involves a deeper addressing of a developmental agenda, linked to the issues of visions, missions, and potentials. The concept originated in Center Spirala as a result of 15 years of dealing with career issues at younger generations, and as the result of contemplating on what are the basic motives for individual’s development, with having in mind issues like self-development, self-leading, self-realisation.

CAT is concretely five days course that involves a group of participants (being actors and viewers at the same time) and career coaches (kind of career directors), who are spending five days together in a particular place (preferably in areas like castles, mansions and alike). Before the course, career directors draft a specific program scenario, based on which participants throughout the course build own theatric role. The latter is something that participants form in line with the contemplation of their real life.

CAT combines art and reality in this sense that addresses participants’ real life (personal or career) with theatre elements. In a way that participants create the theatric role that they form according to their discovered originality and uniqueness (as pillars of their self-identity), and should not base on their social identity (in terms of social categories, roles, and traditions, including age, profession, gender, race, name, nationality, state, culture, religion). In connection with the latter, CAT faces participants with the message, that addressing the individual’s identity in society is habitually limited to the individual's social identity.

During the course, CAT influences participants with two working approaches, inside which they are forced to activate and intertwine two kinds of thinking, logical and insightful. Inside the first working approach, CAT stimulates participants with specific mental tasks, during which they try to reach an own insight on the equalization of individuals' identity with their social identity. In addition, CAT motivates participants to gain another insight on how an individual’s developmental thinking (related to issues of development, growth, professional or personal) is commonly automatically predefined in society (in sense of existing of various tips and recipes on what means to be developed, successful, satisfied, happy, accomplished). To reach these insights, at least to a certain point, participants need to trigger a process of deprogramming of their developmental thinking.

Parallel to the process of reaching both mentioned insights, CAT approaches to participants with another working strategy for strengthening self-identity, based on their originality and uniqueness. In this regard, CAT uses a frame inside the selfmobility concept, so-called 'intrinsic vocation' (deeper approaching to individual’s vision, mission, potential), based on which participants build awareness about their originality and uniqueness. 

Why is the questioning of an individual's identity, addressed by CAT, nowadays extremely important? 

  • Individual’s social identity inside modern society (particularly of the growing generations) has been becoming more disoriented due to a decline of the influence of the traditional pillars of powers (myths, culture, religion, national states, various national institutions);
  • Identity disorientation creates fitting circumstances for (potential) spreading of various kinds of radicalisation; 
  • Identity disorientation makes that growing generations are becoming stronger addicted to virtual technologies; 
  • Strengthening of an individual’s self-identity (in sense of originality and uniqueness) increases quality and satisfaction of individual’s professional/personal life; 
  • Individual balances his weaken social identity with the strengthening of self-identity;
  • The most fundamentally, balancing of social and self-identity enables to an individual to master and overcome his identity, in the sense of nearing closer to the second psychological birth, what the metaphor from ancient philosophy is referring to.

Objectives and target groups

The central objective of the Career Theatre is to trigger at participants process of deprogramming developmental thinking linked to their identity, through which participants strengthen self-identity by achieving broader awareness about their originality and uniqueness.

CAT is suitable for many kinds of professionals (especially for those who are working with people), where they can integrate their strengthened knowledge about self-identity into their professional or personal life.

Regarding younger generations, CAT is relevant for them in their overcoming their identity crisis (through the strengthening of their self-identity) with which they are facing due to a weakening of traditional identity frames in modern societies.

An additional date of the Course can be agreed together according to the applicant's needs. In case of interest, it is possible to realise the course outside Slovenia  

The group supposes not to exceed 10 participants.

Cost for implementation of the Course is in line with costs that emerge in case of KA1 projects under Erasmus+ guidelines.
