Video casebook to support the integration of young migrants/ refugees

About the VIC

The VIC project developed a training programme that supports the integration of young migrants and refugees - especially in terms of training and work. All of which bases itself on the innovative methodology of storytelling and casebook. Storytelling which means learning with the help of stories while learners are actively involved. A casebook collects different stories from migrants and refugees relevant learning purposes.

The training programme was developed within the Erasmus+ programme in cooperation with five partner organisations from France, Italy, Sweden, Greece and Germany. It is freely available following this link:  http://www.vic4integration.eu/en/

Thematic videos

The interviews with migrants were used as a basis to comply ten thematic videos. These contain the migrants‘/refugees‘ experiences regarding specific topics, like voluntary work, education opportunities, contacting, family, mentality and working life. The migrants and refugees told their personal stories, explained reasons why they were forced to leave their home countries behind, but they do not only tell about their suffering and adventures they experienced on their way to the host country, but also shared their first encounters in those countries where they have found a new home. The migrants also reported about their first contacts and gave advices on how to successfully integrate – for example by joining a sports club, attending a language course or engage in voluntary work.

The „videos with success stories“ as well as the „thematic videos“ are very useful for teaching – for example in integration courses and orientation courses to discuss topics like politics, history or religion. Social workers, career advisors or volunteers can benefit from the videos by using them as a motivation or encouragement for recently arrived refugees.

Those interested can access supporting materials in the form of lesson plans via the platform and receive advice on how to create their own teaching materials.

All videos are available in the country’s language with English and German subtitles, which makes them applicable with groups of less experienced learners and new arrivals and allows them to benefit in a much more comprehensive way. http://www.vic4integration.eu/en/videos

Online training

The training contains a detailed explanation of both learning methods (storytelling and casebook), as well as the ten lesson plans accompanying the „thematic videos“, that can be used in teaching. To find out how well the learners have integrated themselves in the host country, they can use a self-assessment questionnaire.

The teaching and learning materials are not only freely available for teachers, social workers, career advisors in order to support their German classes, integration courses or advising tasks, but migrants and refugees  themselves have the chance to use the numerous videos with authentic faces to gain hope and find inspiration. http://www.vic4integration.eu/en/e-course
