Dear EPALE colleagues,
Our theme for September was adult literacy. During this time EPALE’s national teams and the community published a number of inspiring case studies, articles, reports and other resources. You can find them at our dedicated page Basic skills (content varies according to language version).
From 4 to 7 September EPALE invited everyone to share their views on what literacy skills adults need and what makes for an effective policy in this field. The lively discussion was moderated by EPALE’s Thematic Coordinator David Mallows in collaboration with the European Basic Skills Network (EBSN). Nearly 50 participants from 21 countries shared their opinions in over 220 comments.

Literacy and the Upskilling Pathways initiative (EN, FR)
EPALE Thematic Coordinator, Andrew McCoshan, took a look at the questions we need to consider when we think about literacy in the context of the EU Upskilling Pathways initiative.
George K. Zarifis talked about the challenges for many Southeast European countries to implement policies to increase the number of adult learners, especially in literacy programmes.

News from around Europe
A lot happened in September in the adult learning sector across Europe:
- The Danish government announced that it is planning a vocational education and training (VET) reform to make it easier for adults to take part in VET (DA).
- A new campaign was launched in the Netherlands to recruit more language teachers and trainers for migrants with low Dutch literacy (NL).
- Meanwhile in Slovenia, a call for proposals was announced for the 2017 Adult Learning and Knowledge Promotion Award (SL).
