Norwegian national conference on initial literacy

de Astrid Krohn
Limba: EN

The challenge when teaching initial literacy to immigrants is to connect the learners’ accumulated competence to the more formal skills needed in a new culture. To apply a holistic resource perspective on the training by building on the learners’ previous experiences and knowledge was the overall theme at the recent National conference on alphabetization in Norway.

The three-day conference gathered 150 professionals and managers teaching the Norwegian language to immigrants with little schooling from their home countries. On the agenda was presentations of new research and teaching methods, innovative teaching practices and formal as well as informal workshops around the main topics.

This annual Vox-arena has become a cornerstone in the development of initial literacy pedagogics in Norway. Among key topics this year, was an oral approach to initial literacy and applying the 4 resource model developed by the Australians Allan Luke og Peter Freebody.
