Brent Stonebridge Adult Education Centre under threat of demolition

The Stonebridge Adult Education Centre in Brent, Greater London, is under threat of demolition. The building was built in the 19th century by H E Kendall Jr, who also designed St John’s Church in Kensal Green and it is considered to be an important historical site by many local residents. It has a front façade tower feature and arched windows. Some of Kendall’s most famous work includes Spilsby Gaol, Haverholme Priory and the Corn Exchange in Sudbury Suffolk.

As St John’s Church celebrates its 175th anniversary, the possible closure of the Stonebridge Adult Education Centre, which is a site of education provider Brent Start, has come as a surprise to the community. The building has allowed for the provision of a wide range of adult education short courses, including hospitality, arts and crafts and technology. These courses enable learners to develop skills and gain new knowledge that will encourage them to move on to further education or work.

Brent’s Local Plan released in November 2018 states a desire to strengthen local character and identity by protecting and improving heritage and their settings. The possible demolition of the Adult Education Centre is in contradiction to this and some local residents, including the vicar of St john’s Church, have written in to the local Kilburn Times newspaper to voice their disdain and encourage others to stand against its closure and the destruction of local heritage.
