Postat de Caoilte Bashford

An Cosán Virtual Community College (An Cosán VCC) with the support of EPALE Ireland  held its third annual "Community Partner Forum" on Wednesday 29th of May in NDRC, Dublin 8.

This presentation addresses the theme of "The Role of Technology in Shaping the Future of Education and Work".  In it Colm shares the journey he and Southend Family Resource Centre have taken with An Cosán VCC since joining as a community partner in April 2016. In that first term, 14 learners joined a module in 'Learning to Learn' at Third Level from the family resource centre in a working-class estate in Wexford town. Since then 35 learners have engaged in modules and 10 have progressed to the 2nd year of their degree in Leadership and Community Development with An Cosán VCC.  In December 2018 Southend were successful in a grant application to Wexford County Council for Community Enhancement / Smart Villages for funding which enabled them to install an interactive screen in the centre allowing them to participate in ‘classroom to classroom’ education with our live class in An Cosán Tallaght.

By sharing his story, Colm hope to inspire other community leaders like him who work in community organisation’s like Southend FRC not be afraid of technology but rather embrace it to enable learners to access this model of blended learning which has opened up a world of possibilities for the group in the Southend community.

Colm is the Project Manager of Southend Family Resource centre for the past 12 years and has worked in Community development for 30 years in Dublin and Wexford. The mission of Southend Family Resource Centre is to work with the community to improve the quality of people's lives by identifying their needs and issues and to develop responses that specifically address these needs and issues by prioritising disadvantage and social inclusion.
