The European Language Label Awards took place in Ireland this week. One of the award winners on the day was Teanga. This exciting new development in the field of language learning is an online picture and voice-based language learning system. It uses a set of images and symbols common to all languages and dispenses with text, so that students build confidence by focusing on speaking and listening. Students can use the website autonomously to ‘mash’ picture-words within visually structured language patterns.

Op 25 september 2015 vond de tweejaarlijkse conferentie voor de Europese Dag van de Talen plaats in Gent. Het thema van dit jaar was Talen voor Sociale Inclusie. In het publiek vele betrokkenen uit het talenonderwijs, leraren en directies, beleidsmakers, experten, organisaties maar ook heel wat gewone geïnteresseerden in taal. Tijdens de EDT-conferentie werden er prijzen uitgereikt aan opmerkelijke initiatieven die met het leren van talen te maken hebben. Zo is er het Europees Label voor Innovatief Talenonderwijs (ELIT). Verder was ook nog de uitreiking van de prijzen voor de ‘Europese Dag van de Talen’. Ontdek hier wie de winnaars waren.

The International Dyslexia Foundation states that between 15% and 20% of the population have a language-based learning difficulty, dyslexia being the most common of these. Dyslexia is characterised by difficulty with learning to read fluently and with accurate comprehension despite normal or above-average intelligence. Approx. 80% of all people diagnosed with a Specific Learning Difficulty (SpLDs) are dyslexic. According to European Dyslexia Federation, dyslexia affects 8% of the European population.

A new publication has been published by the European Commission which showcases successful projects funded under Key Activity 2 – “Languages” of the Lifelong Learning Programme (LLP).

It aims to provide examples of best practice with 36 successful projects in languages funded under the lifelong learning programme.

Sprachenlernen ist ein klassisches und sehr ausdifferenziertes Feld der Volkshochschulen in Deutschland. Dieser Bereich verengt sich zunehmend auf die Sprache Englisch, sodass sich die VHSn in Deutschland angesichts ihres meist sehr vielfältigen Sprachenangebots, Strategien entwickeln wie sie sich zu dieser Verenglischung verhalten sollten.

Den Trend bedienen oder weiter auf Vielfalt setzen?

This refreshed strategy for English for Speakers of Other Languages sets out the importance and context of ESOL learning in Scotland. It draws links to a range of related policies and offers case studies of different types of provision.

The previous ESOL strategy was launched in 2007 and progress made since then is set out in some detail.

The 2015 ESOL Strategy consists of five strategic objectives linked to the Adult Learning Statement of Ambition:

Artykuł ukazał się w kwartalniku „Języki obce w szkole” (nr 4/2013), wydawanym przez Fundację Rozwoju Systemu Edukacji. Tekst przedstawia wyniki ogólnopolskiego badania ankietowego, w którym wzięli udział seniorzy uczący się języków obcych. Badanie jest częścią większego projektu badawczego w dziedzinie międzykulturowych badań glottogeragogicznych. Analizie poddane zostały miejsca i sposoby uczenia się języków oraz motywacja do podjęcia nauki.

 

These case studies are taken from the publication European Multilingualism Experiences from the Lifelong Learning Programme – Key Activity 2 Languages. The best practice projects funded under LLP, KA2 – Languages focused on the study of inclusive multilingual societies in Europe, promoted intercultural dialogue with respect to migrants and raised awareness of minority European languages such as Romani.

Vlaams minister van Onderwijs Hilde Crevits ondertekende op 14 september het samenwerkingsverband rond de Europese Dag van de Talen (EDT). Deze dag, die het leren van vreemde talen wil promoten en bevorderen, vindt jaarlijks plaats op 26 september en is een initiatief van de Raad van Europa en de Europese Commissie. Met de ondertekening engageert minister Crevits zich om dit initiatief te ondersteunen. Dit jaar staat de Europese Dag van de Talen in Vlaanderen in het teken van ‘Talen voor Sociale Inclusie’.
