Dear EPALE colleagues,

EPALE is picking up speed!

We are happy to announce that there have been several EPALE-related events organised by EPALE’s national teams across Europe. On 29 April EPALE UK had their launch conference in Birmingham, which opened with a surprising circus act, showing everyone a different side of adult learning (EN). EPALE Italy also had an unusual approach at their launch conference on 6 May in Florence, where they presented how food and adult learning can be related. Speaking of successful launch conferences, EPALE Czech Republic also held theirs on 21 May in Prague, the event’s theme being “IT and adult education” (CS).

As part of EPALE Croatia’s regional promotion campaign there were two EPALE workshops in May – in Dubrovnik and in Split – where EPALE Croatia presented the benefits and different features of the platform (HR).

News from around Europe

Norway experimented with a new project on providing craft certificates at work (EN). Five Norwegian county administrations experimented with providing upper secondary education and training in the workplace, and as a result unskilled adults achieved certification as health workers, childcare and youth workers. A project on new skill acquisition was also presented in Italy (IT), where food and healthy nutrition skills development was targeted at prisoners to boost inclusion.

E-learning and distance learning were hot topics in Lithuania and Poland this month. A practice-oriented conference in Lithuania presented how digital literacy can improve the quality of adult learning (LT). In Poland, the National Centre for Supporting Vocational and Continuing Education organised a practical class on how to organise an online course in Moodle (PL).

Meanwhile in the UK, learning is high on the agenda from 1 May to 30 June. During that period the Festival of Learning will bring together the wider education and skills community to celebrate and promote the many learning opportunities available (EN).

In Slovenia, Amnesty International and several Roma organisations have developed a strategy for tackling pressing issues for the Roma minority (SL) with specific objectives, deadlines and methodology. One of the aspects covered by the strategy will be adult education.

Don’t miss – blog posts

Brian Findsen wrote an interesting piece on why intergenerational learning matters (EN). Simon Broek reflects on Brian’s theories in his post ‘Intergenerational learning: it happens all the time’ (EN).

May was EPALE’s community and family learning month. Aaron Rajania wrote a thought-provoking piece on what makes an effective family learning programme (EN). NRDC’s John Swain gave us his reasons why family literacy matters and why it works (EN), while Andrew McCoshan explained what could be improved in this area and why we need more quality options for family learning (EN).

And last but not least, Learner Support Editor Ian Atkinson gave us an interesting insight into how family learning supports inclusion (EN).
